La Castanyada, el Halloween catalán

Hoy es la vigilia del Día de los Difuntos, conocido como Tots Sants en Catalunya, y celebramos La Castanyada. Como el Halloween de los países anglosajones, o el Magosto y el Samaín gallegos, La Castanyada catalana proviene de una antigua fiesta ritual funeraria, aunque hoy en dia no está tan vinculado, celebrándose La Castanyada por separado del Día de los difuntos.

La celebración consiste en comer castañas, panellets y boniatos, además de fruta confitada, todo acompañado de la bebida típica, el moscatel. En las fechas cercanas a la celebración, es habitual ver a las vendedoras de castañas en puestos callejeros -como en la foto-, tostando el fruto seco y envolviéndolo en bolsitas de papel (paperina).

La versión más historicista sobre el origen de esta tradición, explica que la celebración de La Castanyada consta ya en el siglo XVIII como tal, y deriva de las celebraciones funerarias en las que se servian legumbres, frutos secos a los asistentes al funeral, así como panes votivos como ofrenda a los difuntos: panecillos, panellets o panellons. La comida tenia un sentido simbólico de comunión con las almas de los difuntos: tostando las castañas, se rezaban las tres partes del rosario por los difuntos de la família.

La Castanyada, the Catalan Halloween

Today is the eve of All Souls Day, known as Tots Sants in Catalunya, and we celebrate La Castanyada. As the Anglo-Saxon countries celebrate Halloween, or the Galician celebrate Samhain and  Magosto, Catalan’s Castanyada comes from an ancient funeral ritual feast, but today is not so linked, celebrating La Castanyada and the Day of the Dead separately.

The celebration consists of eating chestnuts, panellets, sweet potatoes, and candied fruit, all accompanied by the typical drink, moscatel. Around the time of the celebration, it is common to see women selling chestnuts in street stalls, -as in the photo-, roasting the nuts and wrapping them in paper bags (paperina).

The historicist version of the origin of this tradition, explains that the celebration of the Castanyada was known in the 18th century, and derives from funeral celebrations which were served in legumes and nuts to mourners, and votive breads were offered to the dead: buns, panellons and panellets. The food had a symbolic sense of communion with the souls of the dead: while  chestnuts were roasting, people prayed the three parts of the rosary for the deceased family.
